Botulinum toxins type A and B are purified substances derived from a bacteria blocking muscular nerve signals.
Injecting small amounts into the facial muscles causes diminished unwanted lines.
Botulinum toxin was pioneered by dermatologic surgeons for cosmetic use in 1987.
Treatment with Botox into the underlying facial muscles causes to relax them. Hence the lines gradually smooth out from disuse and new creases are prevented from forming. Other muscles such as those needed to raise the eyebrows are not affected so a perfect natural expression is maintained. There is no down time. Botulinum toxin takes effect about 5-7 days after treatment. The improvement lasts about 4 - 6 months and the effect gradually fades as muscle action returns.
Following botox injection, normal activity can be resumed immediately. Following treatment of the lips, the little wrinkles that cause lipstick to ‘bleed’ are gone.
a) Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
b) Twitching muscles
c) Spastic problems
Are there side effects?
These are minimal and temporary: mild bruising and temporary headache after injections in forehead lasting a few hours.
Botox can be combined with filler substances offering a simple non-surgical alternative to cosmetic surgery.
